RESEARCH SEMINARS
In the scope of the Masters curriculum, the university now offers seminar courses. Completing a Masters-level research seminar per year is required of each student enrolled Masters-level study. Taken as an online seminar, the goal is for students to experience a sort of apprenticeship in formal academic research and debate.
What is the point of a Masters seminar ?
A Masters seminar seeks to give students a means to express and affirm personal thoughts on any given question. This apprenticeship trains them to construct lines of inquiry and points of view that will—in turn--help them to form proper hypothesis. This skill will be especially importantas students come to write their final Masters thesis. More generally speaking, this apprenticeship in debate gives students the confidence to demonstrate an intellectual assurance that will stick with them well beyond the completion of the Master.
Each year, the research seminar takes on different themes that compliment the classic magisterial course offerings, thereby offering a new perspective on a classic question.
The seminar unites Masters-level students who must reflect and engage upon a question together.
It is obligatory, graded, and counts for 6 ECTS .
How does the Seminar Course Take Place ?
The research seminar takes place entirely online. Each seminar is cut into pedagogical chapters, each chapter lasting 15 days. A seminar can be presented in as little as 3 or as many as 5 chapters, according to the theme that is being taken on.
Each online chapter-meeting is open and continuous for 15 days, which will allow students to follow and participate in the seminar according to their availability.
The seminars are hosted on Domuni’s online learning platform, Moodle.
Each student connects when he or she can, and works at his or her own pace, in the 15 days that each chapter is open and operating.
How a Masters Research Seminar Operates
The seminar invites students to work on a text, or many texts, together, by eading an assignment and then presenting their own reports one-by-one. This is then discussed as a group exercise with the professor.
Week 1 of a Chapter:
1. The professor summarizes the reading assignment, deepening the report of each participant’s treatment of the foundaitonal texts. He or she also poses several questions.
2. The student prepares a formal contribution, within the assginment’s stated parameters (usually about 400 characters with spaces).
3. The contributions are posted—at the latest—at the end of the first week.
Week 2 of a Chapter:
1. The second week is devoted to debate and discussion, at the instigation –and under the supervision of—the professor.
2. A final grade is awarded to the student. It is based on the quality of the students contributions to class discussion, as well as their required research work.
